A great shortcut for creating new planes is to select the edge of an existing plane and control + select that plane. Drag where ever you would like the plane or select a point that it can automatically move to.
I love this method for making new planes. It's so quick and easy that I use this method to bring up the "New Plane" property manager. By default it wants to give you a new plane at a distance away from the first plane. But once this window is open, you can delete the parameters and choose a face on the model, or anything else you want. I just use the Control + Drag to quickly bring up the tool. Try it out!
